Education Activities at MCC

Cancer Research Seminars

The Cancer Research Seminars at MCC hosts outside speakers with expertise and national recognition in cancer research to present their research to the entire MCC and PHSU research faculty, staff and students. All seminars are live streamed to both PHSU and MCC, and time is set aside for individual and group meetings with the speaker. Presentations that speakers allow to be recorded will be archived in our Partnership Online Education Library. Topics span basic, population and translational research arenas.

Addressing Cancer in our Catchment Areas Course

This course introduces students to the field of cancer research across the cancer continuum as it relates to addressing needs in the catchment areas. The course utilizes a mix of lectures from MCC faculty, reading assignments, and in-person discussion. It is offered each summer semester to U54 trainees along with other MCC interns and fellows.

Omics Experience

This course provides an overview of the basic principles of biostatistics and genomic data analysis, including analytical techniques involving DNA and gene sequences, gene mutations, gene expression and protein measurements. The lectures provide an overview of the topics and introduce key issues in experimental design and analytical strategies for these molecular types. In addition to the coursework, students will participate in a mock molecular tumor board. Participants will utilize their knowledge of public sequencing resources to evaluate hypothetical cancer patients with specific genomic alterations in their tumors. This course is designed for students with limited previous exposure to biostatistics and bioinformatics, but with a willingness to learn. It is offered each summer semester to U54 trainees.
